As technology advances, the world is becoming increasingly full of hybrids and other engines run by alternative means. Among the most successful stories out there is the example of Elon Musk and Tesla Motors, a company that is named in honor of Nikola Tesla, a famed inventor and contemporary of Thomas Edison. Only a few years old, Tesla Motors makes vehicles that are powered by electrically charged batteries. The cars offer a relatively long range for travelers, can be quickly recharged, and are extremely powerful.
It hasn’t taken long for someone to come up with the same idea for trucking, a possibility that could eventually reduce our reliance on foreign oil. Enter the Nikola One. If it makes it off the drawing board, the Nikola One could go up to 1,200 miles on a 320 kWh battery that never has to be plugged in. The engine would include a natural gas-powered turbine that would charge the battery while on the road. To support these trucks, the company plans to build a network of CNG (compressed natural gas) stations across the country.
The trucks can be pre-ordered for the surprisingly low prices of $1,500 or $750, depending on the size of engine that is selected. The final sticker, however, could be up to $375,000.
While we’ll keep our eyes on these future technologies, we also pride ourselves on Double D’s efficiently managed, existing fleet of trucks. If ol’ Nikola ever fully enters the picture, we’ll let you know.
