It’s no secret that there’s a shortage of good truck drivers out there. Although driving remains a solid career choice with good pay, benefits, and reliability, unfortunately many trucking companies around the United States are encountering difficulties in recruiting new employees into their workforces.
In fact, some estimates indicate that by 2022 there could be a shortfall of as many as 239,000 drivers for the trucks that will be needed by that time. Such a gap leaves an enormous amount of opportunity for individuals looking to start or change to a new career for themselves.
In order to combat this growing problem, leaders in the industry are ratcheting up efforts to actively recruit individuals from various walks of life, including women. Sadly, females only make up a small percentage of the current drivers, a number which in fact has actually dipped since 2011 to only 5.1 percent of the overall industry.
Organizations like Women in Trucking are working hard to get their message out, that there is a place for females in the industry. But beyond demonstrating women have a place at the table, they are indeed sorely needed in order to help fill the employment gap.
