In 2005 while speaking to a Stanford graduating class, Steve Jobs said “your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.”
Being happy at work and loving what you do boosts your productivity and enhances your performance. Studies show that people who enjoy their jobs are more likely to be optimistic and motivated, learn faster, make better business decisions, and fewer mistakes.
Whenever you’re given a task and you view it negatively, your mindset makes it harder for you to complete the job and makes you feel bad about the work you’re doing. When you love your job, you feel fully focused, creative and ideas flow freely. Doing work you love is energizing and creates a positive feedback loop that boosts your productivity. Your passion for the work energizes you and vice-versa, giving you more fuel to put toward success.
So, how do you know when it’s time to find a new career and move on to something you love? If you’re not feeling those emotions in your current job, it may be time to look for a new opportunity. Something that makes you excited again. To do that, it’s important to ask yourself two questions: Am I apathetic about my job? and Do I dread going to work?
You’re apathetic toward your job. As each day passes, have you increasingly disconnected from your responsibilities? Have you checked out mentally? Do you struggle to muster the focus or energy to get through meetings and other daily tasks? If so, it’s a good time to start looking for something else. While there will always be times when you don’t enjoy work, if you regularly feel more negative than positive, it may be time to re-evaluate what you’re doing.
You dread going to work. Everyone has those days when they hit the snooze button one too many times, but if you experience this every morning, it’s time to explore other career opportunities. That’s especially true if you live for the weekend, but despite your best efforts, the dread of Monday creeps in by Saturday night. If you find yourself dissatisfied with your current role, it’s time to think about what other areas of work might better align with your passions.
