Truck drivers work long hours and make several road trips throughout the year, requiring them to pack an emergency kit. Although some may refer to the pack as an emergency or survival kit, some may call it a “bug-out bag” or set of disaster response tools, and the contents may vary.
Although no driver wants to find themselves in emergencies like bad weather, accidents, major traffic jams, or personal health problems, these happen sometimes. When creating your survival kit for your next road trip, consider packing the following:
Items for the Driver
Since you’re operating the vehicle for long periods, you’ll want to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Pack plenty of nonperishable snacks like nuts, protein bars, jerky, crackers, and plenty of water. In inclement weather, pack winter clothing, including wool socks, a beanie, a jacket, winter boots, insulated face masks, blankets, and more.
Also, don’t forget a first aid kit, matches, spare cash, medication, spare eyeglasses or contacts, a warning flag, and anything else you deem necessary. Be sure to organize these items in a nice pack or backpack for easy access if needed.
Items to Take Care of the Truck
You’ll want to ensure you have the tools to take care of your truck on a long road trip in case of an emergency and help with regular upkeep. You should always have truck items on hand, including emergency warning triangles, a tire pressure gauge, jumper cables, a tarp, a wrench, fuses, and pliers. If you lose one item or it becomes worn down, replace it immediately. You never know when you’ll need it, or you can help out another truck driver in need.
Miscellaneous Items
If the items above don’t cover everything you need, don’t hesitate to throw a few miscellaneous items. These include fire extinguishers, snow shovels, cleaning supplies, and more. Also, don’t forget to pack things like a phone charger, CD player, and your favorite book series.
